Video card shortage

Why on earth is it so hard to buy a video card right now? This is getting ridiculous.

RTX 3080 is sold out, RTX 3090 is sold out Basically all Nvidia and AMD cards made within the last 2 years are sold out.

You might be able to find a 1080Ti from 2017 and that will be $1,500 ... ugh

Unless if you're willing to shell out for an entire system, you're not getting the next generation video cards without a struggle. Nvidia nor AMD very much care for their original loyal consumer base, as long as their cards are selling they're not going to make much of an effort to make their next generation of cards more accessible to the hobbyist crowd be it for video games or digital media production, even graphic design and 3D modelling.

Crypto mining is the reason

This guy straight up hit the nail on the head. Nvidia have actually attempted to create a remedy in the form of their CMP (Cryptocurrency Mining Processor) lineup that they've just released in order to try and lure them away from the cards that were originally designed for the hobbyist consumer base. They completely ruined it by selling their entire stock to a single cryptomining company for a fat stack of cash.

Despite Nvidia also placing a rate limiter on their RTX 30 line up in another effort to tackle cryptominers swiping up these cards, their marketing team thought it was a smart idea to provoke the much more technical minded masses to crack this 'uncrackable' rate limiter.

Give it another year or two before this pathetically limited market calms down and catches up with much more stock 😴

We'll probably have to wait 1-2 years until we can buy GPUs at a reasonable price again. I'm stuck with my 1660 GTX for now and hope it'll hold up. We had the same problem about 5 years ago with GPU and RAM, or was it longer ago? Good thing is that a 3080 is probably unnecessary right now unless you're working with GPU Hungry Software for Effects/Editing. I mean the Games wont make a huge jump for the next 2-4 years considering the new consoles just hit and are barely better than a typical hispec pc from 2 years ago.

I wanna add to this cause the crypto goldrush is only a small part of the reason chips are in short supply. The process of making chips is actually a very delicate operation that I would be tempted to describe as an art if it weren’t done in a sterile lab. Speaking of sterile labs, these chip labs are some of the cleanest places on earth with expertly-trained technicians working in full-body suits to make a product that can’t have a single speck of dust on it. All things considered, when the chip industry geared-down for the first round of lockdowns, the world got caught flat-footed by the consequences: getting the industry running again isn’t as simple as flipping a switch. Even now, those labs are rehiring staff that left due to stagnant wages an inflation, buying materials all over the world through logistics turned nightmare-ish by vaccine protocols and staff shortages, and a sudden backlog caused by a sudden resurgence of demand. For perspective, the cost of shipping a cargo container has risen +1,000% in a single year.

Lockdown and quarantine checkpoints, vaccine regulations, severe staff shortages, stagnant wages, looming hyperinflation, and gridlocked cargo. It’s been described as the “perfect storm,” and it’s also why there’s random things missing in the grocery store.
