Fat distribution in naturally skinny vs. naturally overweight people

Genetics obviously plays a role in it, but so does eating habits, plus, I think, how sudden or gradual the gain is.

My fiancée comes from a family that is naturally skinny, and she was quite skinny and athletic herself for a long time, then quickly started putting on weight when she got to college.  I don't know if it was the rapid change in diet, or her new fondness for beer, or both, but she quickly developed a very belly-centric gain.  Belly and boobs started spilling out of everything while her arms, legs, and ass didn't change nearly as much.

So, I think that a body that is genetically predisposed to be skinny, and has been skinny for a long time, and is suddenly subjected to a lot of junk food and alcohol, will start piling weight on the belly first. That's where the "beer belly" legend comes from.
