Celebrating early '00s women's clothing: lots of belly exposure

What was the best era for women's clothing? Are we in it now or is it something you remember from the past?

I think that women's clothing peaked in the late 90s to mid 00s.

Everyone wanted to wear low-rise jeans, and the lower the better. Shirts had to be as tight as possible. Rarely was a shirt long enough to reach the top of the jeans. Lots of girls would wear shirts that ended just above the belly button and would expose half their belly, whether it was flat or round. If a shirt wasn't short enough to expose some belly, the fashion was to go down a size so that the shirt would not be able to cover the whole belly. Girls who wanted to cover their belly struggled to find shirts long enough that could. And if they were long enough, any movement would cause their shirts to ride up and expose a few inches of belly. These girls were constantly struggling to pull their shirts down and keep their belly covered.

The shortest shorts and the shortest miniskirts were in too, always low rise. These things really covered nothing.

Dresses were tight and short. Everything had to be undersized. It was feminine, as opposed to men who wore baggy clothes.

The string bikini ruled swimwear, and few girls were willing to be caught dead in any other type of swimsuit. My current girlfriend, whose weight at the time fluctuated from 20 to 40 pounds overweight, told me she wouldn't have dared wear anything else to the beach. She said that at the time she thought she had good curves and looked really hot in it, but looking back she questions if she should have been showing off her thick and soft size 14 body. But it's what all the cool girls wore, so she never thought to wear anything else and the possibility that she could be too fat to wear it.

For those who weren't confident enough to wear a bikini, they wore a tankini that covered most of the stomach except the lower curve of it. A one-piece was really uncool. The tankini was acceptable, but it was for wimps and fatties. You had to show off your whole stomach to be cool.

These fashions were aimed towards skinny girls because skinny was in, but chubby (and even fat) girls followed these trends because either they wanted to be fashionable or they had no idea how fat they were. Or they had no choice because that's what was available. Body positivity wasn't a thing, and showing off a fat gut or thick thighs was about looking sexy, looking fashionable and fitting in with the cool people. There are still some fat girls from that generation who feel like this and show off their guts because they feel they have something to prove, not for body positivity. They feel like trying to hide their gut is only something that fat people do, and they're not fat if they show it off.

So here are some girls showing off their chub 2001 style, even if the picture may be from a decade later.

Yeah I remember the late ninetees as an overall epic era. I was teenager full of hormones back then, but the fashion with those low rise, tight jeans contributed greatly. Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Destiny Child looked particularly hot in their music videos. I used to record them on vhs and watch those over and over again, even though I didn't really care for the music.

Was there a rationale behind these low-rise jeans? Was it that they lengthen the torso, and a long torso is sexy? And does lengthening the torso make one look slimmer? Is it more comfortable when you have a fat belly so that the jeans don't get in the way? Or was it just a reaction to the "mom jeans" look and the high-rise fashions that preceded this? I have to say, nothing looks more like a mom than wearing large jeans that hold in a fat belly.

This girl is the epitome of how great fashions were 15 years ago.

Her thoughts:

"I'm really hot, and I can dress like the popular girls do."

"I need to show off my stomach. That's what the popular girls are doing."

"I have a bit of a gut, but my boobs are big so my body is in proportion and I'm not fat."

"If I show a lot of cleavage people won't notice how fat my stomach is."

"I feel sexy if I show off my gut"

Meanwhile, all the other girls are talking behind her back about how fat she is or how easy she is, but she's not doing it to get boys. She wants to prove herself to the girls. Did I get this right?

Vow. That is pure perfection. Look at those narrow shoulders, skinny arms and all the fat distribution aorund the lower abdominal area. A fertility goddess. Photos like this is the reason I visit this page.

Ah, that's it. The narrow shoulders and skinny arms are why she can be so chunky around the middle and still somehow not look fat. I never put that together before.

Like the guy before you said, pop stars made them fashionable, so obviously no girl would be caught wearing anything else. Unfortunately (who am I fooling, fortunately!) they were unforgiving, your average girls didn't have the diet or exercise habits of the stars, so even "slim" girls were displaying their naked muffin tops and ass cracks, since their muffin tops pushed their skimpy jeans down and they had no ass to support them (fat belly, muffin top and flat ass seemed to be the look of the day).

Ha, 100%. Flickr/webshots albums and Yahoo groups in the early 2000s were something else.

For swimwear until about 5 years ago, the high-waisted bikini was not a mainstream option if you had a belly. If you were fat, you were expected to wear a one-piece, but nobody wanted to wear a fat person's swimsuit. All the cool girls wore bikinis. If you couldn't bear to bare your stomach you wore a tankini, a tank top with low bikini bottoms that usually showed off the lower belly. Nothing made a girl look chubbier than  a tankini. The smart girls still wore bikinis because they knew a tankini would make their chub look chubbier. Some girls wore a bikini top with boyshort or mini-skirt bottoms, which generally weren't so flattering either as they made girls look bottom-heavy.

Man, the 2000s were a weird time in retrospect. This article gives some good insight: https://www.google.com/amp/s/slate.com/culture/2003/10/the-woes-of-low-rise-pants.amp

I think culturally speaking we were at peak objectification and largely in denial of the obesity trends at the time (to the FAs benefit). Women were trying to show off as much skin as possible, and in response you could almost only exclusively find low-rise jeans, which are unflattering to overweight women in the first place, but then there also weren't a lot of companies catering to plus sized women either.

Also, in the 90s-2000s, we were much more focused on big breasts and small asses, which I think low-rise jeans probably catered to that demographic a little bit better.

Now everyone is trying to hide their belly, hide their muffin top and maximize their ass. Voila. High rise jeans back in fashion.

My thoughts anyways.

You're totally right. That was the time of boobs and stomach, and now it's all about the ass. Today's trends objectively cater much better to heavier women. They hold in a belly. Apart from the trend of showing off the upper stomach, today's trends are much more covered up than they were 15-20 years ago.

Is showing off skin objectifying the body or liberating the body? Young women like to wear revealing clothes because they're told they need to cover up. Now they're told that they can show off their body, and it's not their problem if men find it distracting. When I was in school 20 years ago, girls couldn't wear spaghetti straps, show their midriffs or wear short shorts in school. Girls wanted to wear those clothes because they were against the rules. Now telling girls they can't show off their bodies is slut shaming them.

But on the other hand, I don't get turned on unless I see some skin. Ultimately, we're the ones objectifying women wearing skimpy clothes. It's not the fault of the clothe, it's partially how the clothes are perceived and partially the intent behind wearing the clothes. Most girls were wearing these revealing clothes because they wanted to dress like their friends, who wanted to dress like Britney Spears. The coolest girls in school showed the most cleavage, the most thong and the most belly. Girls wanted to dress like that to be cool and didn't care that boys found them attractive. They were dressing to impress other girls and to be fashionable, not to objectify themselves in a sexual way.

Now, the pressure girls put on other girls to dress like this was a problem of its own. Many girls felt their bodies were inferior because their stomachs weren't flat enough. Then there's my current girlfriend, who at the time was eager to wear jeans with a 3-inch rise, show off her cleavage and the skimpiest string bikinis, and she had no idea that these trends weren't designed for girls who were 30 pounds overweight. But nobody said she was too fat, though I bet some girls must have made fun of her behind her back.

While fashions from this decade of the late '90s to late '00s were all about showing off the stomach, some girls weren't comfortable with showing their (usually pale) belly skin. It wasn't easy to find t-shirts and tank tops that were long enough to reach the top of their low-rise jeans, low-rise shorts or skimpy bikini bottoms. It was harder to find a top that could fit over the curve of a large belly. Dresses weren't so trendy, because how could you show off your stomach skin if you're wearing a dress? Some girls managed to find tops that could cover their belly fat, but the tops had to be skin tight. If they didn't show the indentation of the belly button they weren't tight enough. These girls had to be careful wearing these tops, because the slightest movement would cause the shirt to ride up and expose their whole fat belly or butt crack!

Here are some girls who weren't brave enough to show their bellies but still looked great in those longer skin-tight tops.

It was common for girls to show off just a little belly between the bottom of their tight top and the top of their low-rise jeans, shorts or sweatpants. If you were a girl, maybe the top covered your belly when you bought it but it shrunk in the wash. Or it "shrunk in the wash" (you gained 5 or 10 pounds). Maybe this was as long a top as you could find. Maybe it covers your belly if you keep pulling it down, but the slightest movement causes it to ride up and expose a bit of skin, and still you pull it down over your belt 500 times a day. Maybe you want to show off your belly, but you only show off a sliver so people think you're not showing it off on purpose. After all, you don't want people to think you're a skank.

Here's what this kind of girl looked like.

Many girls would end up accidentally exposing a lot of belly because their top was too tight and not long enough. With just the slightest movement a girl could end up exposing her entire gut. This happened all the time when playing sports or when dancing. It could take them a long time to realize their fat gut was hanging out, and when they realized it they'd be so embarrassed. But they couldn't find tops long enough to prevent this from happening.

I always preferred the girls who showed off the belly on purpose, but I always felt lucky when I got a peak at a nice belly when a girl didn't mean to show it off. These photos explain that phenomenon.

Omg. amazing! Unfortunately it seems shirts got longer by standard now even though girls are much fatter.
