The reason is that it really does inspire a visceral reaction from some people, like disturbs people more than just "oh how annoying." Yeah, hiding threads would be a good idea, also some peoples profile pictures disturb me too. The fact I constantly see it dotted around the site really puts me off on an annoyingly regular basis.
