Those kinds of opinions are not the only ones Lizzo has to deal with every time she comes online. She also has to manage the impossible expectations of the community that's supposed to be championing her the hardest. Writing a lyric in Rumors about her smoothie cleanse and her diet, imo, goes to show that our scrutiny of her as a body positive figure weighed heavy enough to make it in with all the other shit. We do this within body positivity. We want change so badly that we demand perfection from every public figure that stands with us and when they make the slightest move out of line we're so ready to tell them how disappointed we are. None of us have a single fucking clue what it's like to be a fat black woman in Lizzo's shoes. We don't get to demand anything. We are not entitled to anything. The LEAST we can do in return for everything she's done is be a soft place to land when the attacks are constantly coming from the other side. Not add even more pressure. We have to learn how to hold each other even when we're not perfect. We'll eat ourselves alive otherwise. 💜 P.s. My memory flickered to the years of counting sit-ups, going to bed hungry, wearing two layers of spanx, sucking in every day, twisting and contorting and photoshopping myself to avoid this very thing: my body doing what it naturally does, being soft and round and free. Somewhere in the back of my brain an old voice said "Is this it now? Are we never going to try to get that smaller body back again?" I paused, and gently told the voice that no, we won't do that to ourself again. Because we never needed that body to feel all the things we wanted to feel. To feel seen, and loved, cared for, desired, worthy of going places and experiencing things and believing we have value. It was never about the body. And look at us now! Look how we've experienced all those feelings and more. Look at everything we unlearned to get here - to see our stomach sitting on the sink and think it looks cute. If we let that go to chase something smaller, we will have lost something far more precious than the body we've outgrown. I took these pictures, put on my clothes, and spent the rest of the day walking, eating, laughing, watching, living.
