Desdinova Posted February 3, 2018 Share Posted February 3, 2018 As a long-time Trekkie I still haven't totally warmed to the online series Star Trek: Discovery yet, but I was immediately taken with the character of Cadet Sylvia Tilly and the actress who plays her, the cute-as-a-button Mary Weisman! While Tilly is awkward and rambling, and allergies and skin problems they haven't yet cured by the 23rd century, she's undeniably adorable and sweet; and has the sort of idealistic optimism to her character that has long been a vital part of Star Trek (even if the new series hasn't really reflected it often). She also has some infamy has having dropped the first F-bomb in the Star Trek franchise. And she's got some pleasing thickness to her! Abrams recycled some elements own to this somewhat cynically realistic, dark-toned aspect own to the remake universe and fully embraced it through this newly show and Mirror Universe instead just uncreatively repeating the same ol' boring pacific-and-utterly-perfect-predomiantly-male-caucasian-Earthly-Utopia-with-their-outerspace-arse-lickers-VS-Evil-Feudalistic-Aliens dichotomy. I wasn't however appealed by Cadet Sylvia Tilly first. Characters like the Captains Lorca then Georgiou, their diametrically-opposed ideals and ruthlessness, same as the Klingon leader T'Kuvma and his freedom fighter attitude, all echoes a lot more in my mind comapred to her... and oh! I'm definitively rooting for THE Michael Burnham 😍😎🔥🔥🔥🔥 #LitIsaBitchyUnderstatement But the point she was introducted as a comic relief to Burnham's odd, nigh-alien demeanor same as to secure conservative Trekkies and their keyboard-raging minds to the whole shock-value tension to come, seriously get on my nerves because I feared that Abrams finally change his mind and decided to watering down this show before the story even might really goes on (as we may observe in the MCU movies since a couple fo years or with the Arrowverse TV shows) . But at last, I finally found this character more easily evolvable in sort there become geniunely intriguing and original, without necessairly fall into the Mary Sue trope character. She was never really thin and by season three/four, she’s a certified fat girl! The actress got married in 2019, coinciding with the beginning of her gain. I can legitimately see that being an actual conversation the people who make the show had😂. Things like this don't happen often but when they do it's so bloody wonderful. I love it when actresses in typically fit person roles gain weight. You don't imagine a fat person being on a space crew but here she is and it's so goddamn hot.
