They probably brought it up to her under the sake of continuity, but it's not like she's a secondary character to be tossed aside; the crux of the show is about the fathers old-fashioned relationship with an increasingly progressive world and that extends to the relationship he has with his daughters, and Kristen's is the most prominent in that regard. So ultimately the ball was in her court to lose weight, and when she didn't Wardrobe did what they could. Honestly though, what a spectacular gain - even something as simple as the change in her forearms over the years: Here's hoping she gets lots of work in Hollywood with her current weight! I'm certain that men in general are rather accepting of a variety of female physiques just as long as the woman is young, feminine, attractive and pleasant. Look at strip clubs and porn, then compare that to fashion modelling and pageants. I'm sure you'd notice a stark difference in how much variety in size and how heavier the average woman is in the former camps (which cater to straight men) than those of the latter camps (which are run by and cater to women and gay guys). I also believe the men who "hate fatties" are just playing a role to neg women in the laziest and unoriginal way. They'll probably put up with it more than we'll put up with a thin chick.
