Ryan Lochete
I'm going to be selling my Iphone5s on ebay but before I do that I wanted to completely wipe my phone and I mean like not just resets and remove my icloud account. Like actually delete everything. My friend said he took a forensics type class and that there are programs that can recover deleted messages/photos/passwords/other stuff from like iphones even if the stuff has been deleted but like I'm not in the law enforcement and so idk how I would do that. Does anyone know any programs I could buy or places I could go to have my iphone actually wiped so then people can't retrieve my deleted data? and I don't mean this either

jb
I wouldn't worry about it. The only type of person that would use forensic software on your phone would be a cyber forensics analyst if you're suspected of a crime. Deleted files are not deleted until you create new files in the unallocated space. So if you've used your phone long enough it will be written over. It's not like you have kiddie porn on your phone. Also stuff like passwords can't be recovered so it's not that type of security issue. I also took a forensics class

I just worried because like I've been sent nudes and stuff from my Gf via messages which i then saved on my photos and like yeah I've deleted them but after my friend told me that got worried that like someone would try looking for my deleted pictures and messages. But I guess if you say only cyber forensics analysts can do that stuff then thats probably okay?
jb
it's just not likely. you need special expensive software and a lot of free time and still might not retrieve any data worth anything. I don't know if factory resets completely wipe your data clean on iphones. if you're still paranoid you can do the research by googling what you typed in this thread. i personally would not worry about it though
notsofatpat
Are you embarrassed of us to the point you're willing to erase us forever!? Lol If you did a factory clean reset and still worried, put some random pics back on there, any other info, and repeat the process. This will rearrange the IC chip (flip flops, etc), RAM (if iPhones have any, bet they do), and if they try to retrieve any info, it'll be tidbits of the platonic stuff, rather than tidbits of the good stuff... probably. I work with electronics, and lemme say, it's just not that easy. The buyer literally would have no life. You can check the buyer Or bidder purchase history, and see if they are buying phones all the time. Your decision may be merited there. Sure sounds like you're nervous! sum_joe
Take phone factory reset then fill it up with like photos of flowers or some harmless junk files to reset it again via the same method. Reason is deleting and factory reseting still leaves unallocated space and remnants of things that could be there and by filling in the reset phone with pics you use it up so any further traces show flowers and such. sbu
The easiest way would be to overwrite the "empty" space with new content. Like flowers, trees or whatever until there is no empty space left.
Guest rurusimple
The factory reset should format the phone and scatter your old data around so much it would be illegible. Also unless you have nuclear launch codes on your phone i wouldn't worry about the government. (Hacks phone retrieves single text "Do you think my ass looks fat?") No offense, but unless you're dating someone like Taylor Swift nobody is going to care enough to go through the trouble of attempting to retrieve erased data from your phone. In fact, very few people have to the tools and know-how to access "deleted" files, and almost 100% of those are law enforcement agents working in the cyber/digital-forensics department. If I were you, I'd only be remotely worried if I had something far more sinister to hide than a consenting GF's naked selfies.
